Pediatric Immersion Experience (PIE)
PIE offers students a unique opportunity to participate in a three-month observational program. Held during the fall and spring semesters, the program features 10 days of observation, virtual learning sessions, and personalized mentorship with a nursing professional. Open to: Students enrolled in an RN program (i.e. Nursing Diploma, ASN, BSN) who are within 12 months of graduation by the start of CHOP’s Summer Nurse Extern program.
Drexel Nursing Ops Co-Op
In partnership with Drexel University, we welcome two co-op cohorts—Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter—to gain hands-on experience at CHOP each year. A centralized program through Nursing Operations/Professional Development, the co-op is offered at two levels and three locations: Main Hospital (Philadelphia), Middleman Family Pavilion (King of Prussia), and our Behavioral Health and Crisis Center at Cedar Avenue (Philadelphia).

Open to: Drexel University students. Level II candidates must be Nursing majors who have completed at least one clinical rotation by the start of the co-op. 
Summer Nurse Extern Program
Over the course of 10 weeks in the spring, externs apply academic knowledge to practice, participate in educational seminars, and provide hands-on patient care alongside nurse preceptors. Externs rotate across units across CHOP, including Middleman Family Pavilion (King of Prussia), Ambulatory, Perioperative, Behavioral Health, and Medical/Surgical & Critical Care.

Open to: Students enrolled in an RN program (i.e. BSN, ASN, or Nursing Diploma) who are within 12 months of graduation by the start of the program (December 2027 or May 2028 graduates) and available for the full 10 weeks. 
Summer Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program 
A summer program designed to stimulate career interest in pediatric oncology, the Flynn Fellowship provides comprehensive clinical exposure to the full continuum of cancer care. This enriching experience involves classroom time, weekly “lunch-and-learn” sessions, and shadow days.

Open to: Students enrolled in an RN program (i.e. BSN, ASN, or Nursing Diploma) who are within 12 months of graduation by the start of the program (December 2027 or May 2028 graduates) and available for the full 10 weeks.
Applications for our 2027 Nurse Externship and Flynn Fellowship programs will be accepted October 5–9, 2026. Candidates may apply to both programs.

Become a Breakthrough Maker Nurse Residency Our 12-month Nurse Residency helps new graduate nurses transition into their first professional roles. At the program's completion, residents practicing in inpatient settings may be promoted to Clinical Nurse positions.
