Job Summary

The Senior Director, Brand Communications will amplify the mission and strategy of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia through corporate level communications that both build and safeguard the organization’s profile and brand. This role serves as lead strategist and spokesperson for crises and incidents, oversees executive communications and develops communications strategies that showcase CHOP’s impact, influence and thought leadership on a regional, national and global level.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as expert advisor to c-suite on issues and crises that threaten brand reputation while working in coordination and collaboration with Internal Communications; includes managing organizational response plans across areas of risk, providing media training for key executives, leading on-the-ground, real-time support for crises/incidents and serving as enterprise spokesperson in appropriate situations.
  • Identifies opportunities to build CHOP’s leadership story; develops communications strategies to bolster community, civic and donor engagement, advocate for issues of critical importance to child health and showcase the aggregate impact of CHOP’s innovation and thought leadership to build the brand’s reputation nationally and internationally.
  • Oversees executive communications, ensuring that top executives are supported with speechwriting, presentations, talking points, executive bios and media training for key events; identifies/vets/secures/develops CEO thought leadership opportunities including but not limited to speeches, presentations and OP-EDs; manages CEO communications channels in collaboration with Internal Communications and PR.
  • Leverages news and industry developments to create timely and relevant opportunities for CHOP to contribute to the national discourse on topics of strategic importance.
  • Works in close coordination with key leaders in Public Relations, Brand & Marketing, HR/Internal Communications to align strategies, internal/external messaging and reflect identity consistent with CHOP brand

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree


Required Experience: At least fifteen (15) years’ experience leading/managing corporate communications for a large organization; extensive crisis communications experience, including serving as on-camera spokesperson as the situation warrants.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Master’s degree


Preferred Experience: Healthcare experience

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Ability to lead strategically; effectively collaborate, influence and navigate a large and complex organization
  • Strong communications and team-building skills; ability to drive alignment to goals; extensive experience advising senior executives
  • Evidence of strong contacts with media and influencers; ability to serve as an external spokesperson
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to write, edit and review written communication developed by department staff
