Job Summary

  • Provides technical direction, evaluates and recommends the use of new technologies.
  • Performs system engineering analyses across multiple platforms. Is able to perform requirements gathering, requirement validation and verification.
  • Takes the lead to coordinate with team members inside and outside of the organization to support project, planning and policy issues.
  • Develops and documents systems engineering standards.
  • Devises solutions to operational and project problems using creative solutions and working within the capacity and limitations of the organization.
  • Evaluates designs, documents, tests, monitors, tunes and sets standards.
  • Assists upper management in identifying potential new products or business opportunities and defines associated program requirements.
  • Evaluates highly complex system designs and architectures and recommends design modifications to eliminate single points of failure.

Job Responsibilities

A VMWare Engineer Principal has similar responsibilities to Systems Engineer III personnel. However, a VMWare Engineer Principal is deemed to be the subject matter expert and in-house advisor on complex problems and issues. A VMWare Engineer Principal also:

  1. Works independently to initiate assignments and draws upon extensive professional knowledge and experience to make independent judgments regarding the appropriate approach to complex projects and in determining objectives.
  2. Plans, coordinates and performs complex assignments under minimal supervision.
  3. Provides time and cost estimation for project planning.
  4. Has the capability to work with MS Project for including project asset needs.
  5. Possesses strong verbal and written communications skills, including proficiency Microsoft Visio and other MS Office products to develop technical documentation and participate in design review efforts.
  6. Interacts and manages Tiers 1 - 3, and assists with production application support as needed.
  7. Counsels management, customer personnel and colleagues on resolving complex technical issues.

The department works 80% remotely, 20% on site in our Philadelphia offices on an as-needed basis.  

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: HS Diploma/GED.

 

Required Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of experience performing system administration and engineering for one of the following systems Red hat Linux UNIX, Windows, IBM, HDS, Citrix, Infrastructure as a service/ Cloud and/or Virtualization technologies (Xen, Vmware, Microsoft Server).
  • Previous experience engineering, leading and implementing large, complex, enterprise class solutions in a global environment.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:                                                                                                                     

  • Nine (9) or more years of experience performing system administration and engineering for one of the following systems Red hat Linux UNIX, Windows, IBM, HDS, Citrix, Infrastructure as a service/ Cloud and/or Virtualization technologies (Xen, Vmware, Microsoft Server).
  • Senior level experience in developing emerging technology solutions.

 

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: Advanced certification in area of concentration.

Additional Technical Requirements

Technical Expertise

  • It is required that a Principal demonstrate in depth knowledge at the highest level of a specific technical discipline.  Including but not limited to understanding of technical functionality, integration points with other services, industry roadmaps associated with both their specific discipline but also competitive services where applicable.  It is expected that a Principal will maintain current certification within their technical discipline as appropriate.
  • Examples of activities that demonstrate Principal level technical skill:  Published or sited technical materials used by vendors or technical user groups.  Presentation of technical materials in broader than CHOP forums.  Active participation in product development and testing.

Training & Mentoring

  • The Principal is expected to be the lead for training and education of fellow staff members within that specific discipline.  Structured information sharing cover areas such are technical innovation, operational management, and process functionality should be conducted frequently both formally and informally.  The Principal is in large part responsible for guiding other team members to increase their skill in their specific discipline.  At a minimum structured training and mentoring should occur quarterly and with any major change in technical services such as, version changes, new product deployment, or service decommissioning.  The principal needs to follow the technology training guidelines.  

Business impact of technology

  • It is expected that a Principal will have a clear understanding of the current and potential use and impact of the technology in their discipline.  They should be able to clearly articulate this information to both technical and non-technical audiences.  Principal should have a clear understanding of the user base they are supporting and should drive structured customer feedback activities at least twice a year.  In addition to solicited feedback development of service the Principal should drive creation and support of minimally three specific technical and non-technical KPI.

Fiscal responsibility in Design/Service Delivery

  • The Principal must design keeping in mind the best technical options for their discipline as well as the financial implication of any suggested designs.  Taking into account not only up-front costs but recurring costs through the life cycle of the service.

Security and Compliance

  • The Principal must be capable of performing security risk assessments for existing and for new services. They should be able to recommend risk mitigation solutions and work to improve security compliance and system hardening standards.    Principals have an obligation to report any deviation from approved use of technology.
  • The principal is to lead RCA effort’s within their domain and provide technical verification/approval during the RCA.  Principal will provide service reviews at scheduled intervals after a service go live (120, 180, 365).
