Job Summary

Provide clinical care to a wide variety of research animals, oversee colony health management, assist in training of vivarium staff and research personnel, consult with researchers on animal models, assist in assuring regulatory compliance and participate in IACUC activities.  Supervise Research Support Specialists, train research support specialists.  Work with Research Support Specialists to provide investigator surgical and anesthetic support. 

Job Responsibilities

Provide routine clinical and emergency care to laboratory animals

  • Perform quarantine exams of large animals
  • Provide preventative care (examinations, vaccination, dental prophylaxis)
  • Review and respond to reports of animals in need of veterinary exam and care
  • Manage surgical, anesthetic, and post-op care of animals
  • Review colony health testing
  • Oversee quarantine including review of health reports from incoming shipments


2. Staff & Investigator training

  • Develop training programs, manuals, materials, presentations
  • Provide hands on training for the DVR staff and researchers
  • Supervise research personnel conducting procedures to ensure technique meets expectations


3. Consult with researchers on animal models

  • Consult on protocol development and experimental design
  • Provide anesthesia, surgical, and analgesia recommendations
  • Pre-review protocols and amendments at investigator request
  • Supervise procedures at investigator or IACUC request


4. Ensure regulatory compliance

  • Review medical, surgical, anesthesia and analgesia records
  • Develop tools to assist staff and investigators in compliance-related activities
  • Conduct monthly facility inspections
  • Review IACUC protocols, attend IACUC meetings, may serve as a voting member of the IACUC
  • Work with Post Approval Monitor to audit protocols on a routine basis and for cause



Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

License to practice veterinary medicine

Required Education and Experience


Required Education: VMD/DVM or equivalent degree


Required Experience: At least five (5) years of clinical experience in a laboratory animal setting     

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience: Prior experience managing personnel

  • Recognize importance of confidential information
  • Management of staff
