Job Summary

Under the direction of an RN, the Senior Nursing Aide assists in the provision of care to patients. He/she also maintains the patient unit environment in a well-stocked and organized fashion.

Job Responsibilities

Assists in the provision of care to patients and families under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

  • Provides safe supportive care for patients in their activities of daily living.  Activities include: AM/PM care, monitoring vital signs, feeding, toileting, bathing and dressing, and changing bed linens.
  • Quickly and accurately communicates patient information to the appropriate team member.
  • Assists other staff in examination or treatment procedures, including positioning, holding, and comforting patients.
  • Transports stable patients to other departments and areas. Secures transport vehicles and safely transports patients.
  • Participates in the admission or discharge of patients.  Escorts patients to hospital exit, removes supplies and equipment from patients’ rooms, and prepares rooms for next admission.
  • Responds according to Unit procedures in emergency situations. 
  • Floats to other Units as necessary.
  • Sets-up patient procedure trays and prepares them for return to SPD after use.
  • Responds promptly and positively to patient/family requests in a respectful and courteous manner. Obtains assistance of other team members, as needed, to address patient needs.
  • Answers patient call bells or requests and refers the appropriate individuals to assist them.
  • Communicates with other team members regarding patient status and needs.
  • Orients new staff to the role.
  • Attends training for and participates in 1:1 observation of patients as assigned.


Maintains a well-stocked, organized patient unit environment.

  • Each shift, stocks patient bedside with required supplies, changes equipment as needed.  Each shift, checks and changes needle/syringe containers as needed. Changes and dates suction bottles every 24 hours or more frequently, as needed.
  • Stocks utility, medication, and treatment carts. Straightens and stocks isolation anterooms.
  • Obtains equipment and supplies from various departments, as needed.  Cleans and returns borrowed equipment after use.  Notifies Inpatient Clerk of broken equipment, tags it, and moves it to appropriate area for repair.  Notifies Administrative Assistant of equipment sent to Biomedical Dept for record keeping purposes.
  • Maintains a therapeutic environment by cleaning and keeping the following areas neat:
    • Treatment room, including tables.
    • Counters in all utility rooms.
    • Medication and specimen refrigerators.
    • Equipment, furniture, and toys.
    • Playrooms and storage areas.
  • Generates service charges for equipment and supply items used by patients. 
  • Runs errands to deliver specimens, paperwork, equipment, etc.

Follows hospital and department policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to attendance policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of CHOP and department policies and procedures.
  • Reviews policy and procedure updates from managers and CHOP.
  • Attends mandatory sessions/meetings/in-services 100% of the time.
  • Keeps charge nurse aware of whereabouts, activities, etc. and reports completion of duties.


Demonstrates health care informatics competency to manage patient care and work processes, which includes.

  • Basic computer competency, including (as applicable), the effective use of patient care devices, computers, computer software programs such as e-mail and word processing programs, shared network file space, and Learning Link.
  • Information literacy, including the effective use of the CHOP Intranet to find electronic resources for patient care, assigned work processes/workflows, and human resource/employee information.
  • Information management skills, including the effective use of the electronic health record, patient access revenue cycle functions, and human resource/employee systems, as applicable.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: High School/GED. According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing.
