Job Summary

May be filling multiple positions. Under the direction of an RN, the Senior Nursing Aide assists in the provision of care to patients. He/she also maintains the patient unit environment in a well-stocked and organized fashion. Utilizes CHOP values and service standards as a basis for assisting in delivery of care.

Job Responsibilities

Assists in the provision of care to patients and families under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

  • Provides safe supportive care for patients in their activities of daily living.  Activities include:
    • AM/PM care
    • Obtaining vital signs
    • Preparation and Feeding
    • Toileting
    • Bathing and dressing
    • Changing bed linens
    • Oral Care
    • Ambulating when deemed appropriate by RN
    • Patient appropriate measurements and weights
    • Point of Care – glucose, pH, hemoccult, gastrocult
  • Quickly and accurately communicates patient information, status, and needs to the RN and members of the care team.
  • Documents appropriate patient information in EPIC as per EPIC training
  • Proactive rounding to support patient care needs.
  • Assists examination or treatment procedures, including positioning, holding, and comforting patients.
  • Transports stable patients to other departments and areas. Secures transport vehicles and safely transports patients as per hospital transport policy.
  • Participates in the admission or discharge of patients. 
    • Admission: Set up clean sleep surface, room supplies and equipment, and unit orientation
    • Discharge: Escorts patients to hospital exit, removes supplies and equipment (i.e. pumps, extra supplies, bedside carts, etc.) from patients’ rooms, returns clean equipment and unused supplies, and prepares rooms for next admission.
  • Responds according to Unit procedures in emergency situations. 
  • Sets-up patient procedure trays and prepares them for return to SPD after use.
  • Responds promptly and positively to patient/family requests in line with CHOP values and service standards. Obtains assistance of other team members, as needed, to address patient needs.
  • Answers patient call bells or requests and refers the appropriate individuals to assist them.
  • Answers unit phones as requested with appropriate resources when providing desk coverage.
  • Orients new staff to the role.
  • Completes training for and participates in 1:1 observation of patients as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned based on competency and training.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Maintains a well-stocked, organized patient unit environment.

  • Each shift, stocks patient bedside with required supplies, changes equipment as needed.
  • Changes and dates suction canisters every 24 hours or more frequently, as needed.
  • Stocks utility, bedside, and treatment carts. Straightens and stocks isolation anterooms and/or carts.
  • Obtains equipment and supplies from various departments, as needed.  Cleans and returns borrowed equipment after use.  Notifies Inpatient Clerk of broken equipment, tags it, and moves it to appropriate area for repair.  Notifies Administrative Assistant of equipment sent to Biomedical Dept for record keeping purposes.
  • Maintains a safe environment by cleaning and keeping the following areas neat:
    • Treatment room, including tables.
    • Counters in all utility rooms.
    • Refrigerators as assigned.
    • Equipment, furniture, and toys.
    • Playrooms
    • Storage areas including soiled utility and clean equipment room.
    • Participates in long stay cleans
  • Cleans all equipment as per hospital standard between patient use.
  • Generates service charges for equipment and supply items used by patients. 
  • Deliver or pick up specimens, paperwork, equipment, formula, IV fluids, etc. as requested for patient and unit needs.

 

Follows hospital and department policies and procedures

  • Adheres to attendance policies and procedures and Rules of Conduct.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of CHOP and department policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes safety behaviors for error prevention.
  • Reviews policy and procedure updates from managers and CHOP.
  • Attends mandatory sessions/meetings/in-services 100% of the time.
  • Communicates with assigned patient RN and charge RN related to coverage (i.e. activities and whereabouts) and reports completion of duties.
  • Participates in unit safety huddles.
  • Maintains hospital required use of RTLS badge and hospital issued communication device.
  • Floats to other Units as necessary.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Demonstrates health care informatics competency to manage patient care and work processes, which includes.

  • Basic computer competency, including (as applicable), the effective use of patient care devices, computers, computer software programs such as e-mail, @CHOP, shared network file space, and MyCareer.
  • Information literacy, including the effective use of the electronic health record, @CHOP site to find electronic resources for patient care, assigned work processes/workflows, and human resource/employee information.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: High School/GED. According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing.

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, verbally and in writing.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks according to Unit’s needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
