Job Summary

Under limited supervision by the Vice Chair of Research and Clinical Research Program Manager, the medical/science writer works on various projects to support the attending radiologists, fellows, residents and researchers in the Department of Radiology. Responsibilities include editing of manuscripts, grants and reports. Participates in providing assistance on grant applications in the form of consulting, writing, editing and organizing aspects of an application.




The ideal candidate will...

• Edit drafts of publications to be submitted
• Assist in consulting, reviewing, editing, writing and organizing proposals for investigators as requested
• Obtain, organize and update statistical information for use in grant applications
• Write “non-science” sections of grant applications individually as needed/requested
• Reformat grant applications to meet the requirements of specific funding agencies
• Research and write institutional letters of support for grant applications
• Create templates for commonly used grant components
• Maintain database of funded grants for access by faculty and research staff
• Identify new funding opportunities

Job Responsibilities

  • The Senior Medical & Science Writer develops print and electronic materials for all areas of the institution served by Public Relations, with particular emphasis on the medical and scientific studies of the Research Institute.
  • Researches, drafts and completes specialized writing assignments related to complex scientific research in an effort to have descriptions of the research appear in publications related to the area of scientific investigation. Assignments may include projects for both print and electronic media. 
  • Proactively seeks opportunities to promote research aligned with CHOP’s most Strategic Programs; develops and executes strategies to highlight the unique research capabilities of the Research Institute and their applications within the clinical environment.
  • Serves as the primary expert and contact in Public Relations for all research scientists seeking publicity for their research.  Advises PR staff who work with research scientists on procedures for collateral material development.
  • Utilizes experience and an understanding of complex scientific and medical topics to create understandable and meaningful explanations of significant scientific and medical research papers and reports for the general public’s appreciation and understanding.
  • Adheres to sometimes tight deadlines to ensure completion and delivery of finished work product on time with minimal supervision.  Manages a large volume of work and effectively manages multiple projects simultaneously
  • Assists other Public Relations staff in researching and drafting other press releases and materials touching on research and other topics as requested by the Director.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact confidently and sensitively with research clients at all levels of the institution and to assist them is promoting CHOP’s research and discoveries while using strong collaborative skills and an ability to work well in a team environment.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 5 years medical & science writing experience.
