Job Summary

Responsible for the conduct and direction of clinical data management and analysis to support critical care practice.  Through partnership with the Team Leader/Manager drives selection and implementation of critical care clinical and administrative initiatives including patient safety, quality improvement, evidence based practice and research activities. Supports clinical practice by making recommendations and participating in initiatives to improve practice. Under the guidance of the CCCEO team leader/manager, partners with clinicians, administrators and shared governance to identify and orchestrate production of the data needed for a population or initiative.  As a key member of the CCCEO, serves as an organizational resource and subject matter expert in data extraction, interpretation and synthesis for both external registry submission and internal needs. Mentors nursing staff regarding clinical data collection, analysis and integration of data into quality initiatives and evidence based practice. Creates reports and presents visual display of data in a way that moves leaders to understand performance and if needed to make improvement in the identified area. Acts as an advocate for data integrity, use and implementation among department operations. Merges understanding of clinical practice and clinical data to serve as a leader for quality improvement initiatives and the creation of care standards to contribute to evidenced based practice within Critical Care. Participates in direct patient care within the context of clinical expectations.

Job Responsibilities

1.  Data Management  

  • Supports data management best practices and knowledge thereof in a standardized, transparent and efficient manner.
  • Uses clinical expertise to guide initiatives while integrating understanding of clinical data.
  • Partners with department and shared governance teams as well as with enterprise analytics to identify, understand and prioritize data sets needed for an improvement initiatives or programs for purposes relative to patient safety, inquiry or clinical improvement.
  • Leads report preparation and presentation.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely abstraction and entry of data into the registry database to meet the needs of data harvesting and reporting requirements.
  • Perform quality assurance procedures on all data at regular intervals and upon request.

  • Provides consultation to develop critical care and enterprise standards and role models professional behaviors that promote a positive image of Nursing.
  • Engages critical care leadership teams and shared governance to implement systems that support quality initiatives and evidence based practice.

  • Participates collaboratively in staff meetings, committees, projects and teams to resolve conflicts and meet institutional goals.

  • Provides clinical support in the care of complex and vulnerable populations through direct care.
  • Partners with critical care leadership and shared governance to develop and execute action plans for measureable continuous quality improvement in care outcomes.
  • Promotes compliance to systems that demonstrate quality, efficient and cost effective care at the bedside.
  • Provides consultation regarding clinical data to department in support of clinical practice
  • Uses clinical expertise to guide initiatives while integrating understanding of clinical data and it’s important to project success.
  • Actively participates in relevant meetings to infuse clinical data into decision making

4. Advancing Practice

  • Promotes evidence-based practice by leading system improvements and measuring outcomes with concise metrics.
  • Assists in developing and deploying systems that assure consistent and appropriate resources. 
  • Leads team projects.
  • Mentors nursing staff regarding clinical data collection, analysis and integration of data into quality initiatives and evidence based practice.

5. Financial Stewardship

  • Partners with unit management to identify and execute unit based quality improvement initiatives that result in a measurable impact on quality, cost and resource utilization.
  • Participates in promoting quality cost effective care
  • Monitors own usage of supplies and equipment, identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations
  • Manages own time to accomplish responsibilities in a cost efficient manner.
  • Identifies ideas for improved productivity through data evaluation within the context of clinical practice

6. Innovation and Learning

  • Seeks opportunities to surface ideas  and provide leadership in project development
  • Leads and supports evidence based practice planning and implementation of programs.
  • Promotes evidence-based practice and generates ideas for inquiry and quality based initiatives.
  • Uses advanced analytic skills to support innovation solutions through the use of clinical data

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
RN - Registered Nurse
Required Education and Experience
  • BSN with at least 5 years of pediatric critical care experience.
  • Registered Nurse with extensive pediatric critical care experience
  • Excellent clinical understanding of the care provided in the critical care area.
  • Successful completion of all pre-training and ongoing training as required by registries 
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

  • Knowledge of computers and appropriate software packages including Excel and Powerpoint.

  • Ability to interact with all members of the critical care team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner
  • Knowledge of Epic and ChartMaxx
