Job Summary

Specifically, the Senior Biological Safety Specialist provides support to the Institutional Biological Safety Officer (BSO) for the biosafety research program. The biosafety program involves the oversight of all recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid and biohazard research to ensure compliance with all institutional policies and applicable regulations. The Senior Biological Safety Specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of a comprehensive biosafety program for the Research Institute that is designed to control laboratory staff and lab support staff exposure to biohazards, develops policies and procedures for the safe use of biohazards, and develops training and education programs for researchers and research support staff. The ideal candidate will have a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences and relevant experience in the biological safety field, including knowledge of identifying, handling, and decontamination of biological agents.

Job Responsibilities
  • Oversee safety programs and escalate and resolve any issues.
  • Lead regular investigations, surveys, risk assessments, audits and data collection.
  • Respond to concerns regarding safety and health, and complete incident investigations.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for compliance and improvement.
  • Manage related equipment including industrial hygiene equipment to office furniture.
  • Implement and track safety data and support related database systems.
  • Prepares, reviews and revises safety information including web content.
  • Facilitate and participate in safety response programs including laboratory, hazardous materials, bio-response, incipient fire brigade, and on-call programs.
  • Create and deliver safety trainings as needed and ensure related compliance.
Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Biological risk assessments and monitoring:

  • Ability to assess biological risks and hazards and make recommendations on preventative actions and control measures. 

Lab safety surveys:

  • Conducts lab safety surveys, including on and off boarding meetings with Principal Investigators (PIs), to ensure compliance with the biosafety program requirements and to determine if research involving recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids (rDNA) is conducted appropriately.
  • Manages data collected regarding biological materials and rDNA used in research laboratories.

Policy and standard operating procedure development:

  • With guidance from the Senior Safety Manager and BSO, develops policies and standard operating procedures for the safe handling and disposal of biohazards and recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules and implements new programs as identified to strengthen the Biosafety Program.
  • Continually reviews and evaluates local, state, and federal regulations regarding biohazard use and disposal in a laboratory setting to determine application to the Research Institute.
Job Responsibilities (Continued)

With the Senior Safety Manager and BSO reviews:

  • Research protocols involving biohazards and/or recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules.
  • Research protocols involving potential Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) and assists in the administration of the DURC Institutional Review Entity (IRE).
  • Research protocols involving the use of animals.
  • Reviews and evaluates all Occupational Health Risk Assessment questionnaires for lab animal users.
  • Supports the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Office via accessing IBC databases to assist in the review of use and registration of biohazards and recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules

Training laboratory staff and laboratory support staff:

  • With the Senior Safety Manager, develops and presents biological safety training.
  • With guidance from the Senior Safety Manager, develops and delivers lab safety meeting educational series presentations.

With the Biosafety team, will perform other duties as assigned, such as: 

  • inventory, assess, and order supplies for the biological safety program; develop the flow cytometry safety, cryostat safety, and any other newly developed programs; maintain the electronic safety database.
Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Occupational Health / Safety, Environmental Health / Sciences, or related field

Required Experience: Five (5) years of safety experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: 

  • Certified Safety Professional (CPS) Certification 
  • HAZWOPER 40 hours training
Additional Technical Requirements
  • Medically cleared to wear Level B personal protective equipment
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) 24 hours training by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or within 180 days of placement into position
  • Advanced knowledge of safety guidelines / regulations including from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Association Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (ACGIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
  • Basic proficiency with personal protective equipment
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office) including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent critical thinking / problem-solving skills
