Job Summary

Support the Fire and Life Safety Programs by completing construction rounds, hot work inspections, safety training, risk assessments and reviewing safety data sheets.  Support the completion of fire drills and Facilities projects.   The Safety Specialist is a detail-oriented individual who is capable of building strong working relationships while improving intrapersonal skills with demonstrated abilities to work autonomously in complex, often ambiguous environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate safety programs and escalate and resolve any issues.
  • Conduct and assist regular investigations, surveys, risk assessments, audits and data collection.
  • Respond to concerns regarding safety and health, and complete incident investigations.
  • Review policies and procedures for compliance and improvement.
  • Assist in the management of safety related equipment including industrial hygiene equipment to office furniture.
  • Track safety data and support related database systems.
  • Reviews and revises safety information including web content.
  • Participate in safety response programs including laboratory, hazardous materials, bio-response, incipient fire brigade, and on-call programs.
  • Create and deliver safety trainings as needed and ensure related compliance.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree

 

Required Experience: At least three (3) years’ experience in industrial hygiene/safety field

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred experience in healthcare.

Preferred educaiton: NFPA 101 Experience with fire safety

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:

  • OSHA 30 Hour for Construction (1926)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (CHEM)
  • Certified Office Ergonomics Educator (COEE)
  • Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST)

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Inspection and hazard analysis and response
  • Knowledgeable of NFPA codes
  • Medically cleared to wear Level B personal protective equipment
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) 24 hours training by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or within 180 days of placement into position
  • Intermediate knowledge of safety guidelines / regulations including from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Association Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (ACGIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
  • Basic proficiency with personal protective equipment
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office) including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong critical thinking / problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to gather, analyze and make recommendations/decisions based on data

  • Ability to operate a company vehicle and/ or be insured through a company policy
