Job Summary

This role supports safety programs including industrial / chemical hygiene, air monitoring, laboratory safety, hazardous materials, ergonomics, and biological monitoring / responses.


This role supports the biosafety program and ensures research involving recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids is in compliance with policies, guidelines and regulations.


Assist in the review of potential Dual Use Research of Concerns (DURC) and assist in the administration of the DURC institutional review entity (IRE).

  • Manage related equipment, inventories and systems.
  • Participate in safety response programs including flow cytometry and cryostat safety.
  • Assist in the review of protocols subject to research guidelines (National Institutes of Health  - NIH)


The ideal candidate will possess one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience in the biological safety field, including knowledge of identifying, handling, and decontamination of biological agents.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate safety programs and escalate and resolve any issues.
  • Conduct and assist regular investigations, surveys, risk assessments, audits and data collection.
  • Respond to concerns regarding safety and health, and complete incident investigations.
  • Review policies and procedures for compliance and improvement.
  • Assist in the management of safety related equipment including industrial hygiene equipment to office furniture.
  • Track safety data and support related database systems.
  • Reviews and revises safety information including web content.
  • Participate in safety response programs including laboratory, hazardous materials, bio-response, incipient fire brigade, and on-call programs.
  • Create and deliver safety trainings as needed and ensure related compliance.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree


Required Experience: At least three (3) years’ experience in industrial hygiene/safety field

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:

  • OSHA 10-hr Construction Safety Certified
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
  • Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (CHEM)
  • Certified Office Ergonomics Educator (COEE)

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Knowledgeable of NFPA codes
  • Medically cleared to wear Level B personal protective equipment
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) 24 hours training by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or within 180 days of placement into position
  • Intermediate knowledge of safety guidelines / regulations including from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Association Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (ACGIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
  • Basic proficiency with personal protective equipment
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office) including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
