Job Summary

A Research Technician IV is required for a young lab that combines technology development of pooled genome-wide CRISPR based perturbation screens, genome-editing and additional high throughput genomic approaches for studying early and late onset neurodegenerative diseases. The lab is part of the Raymond G. Perelman Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics (CCMT) and the Department of Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). The CCMT fosters a multidisciplinary approach among researchers and scientists working to discover new gene and cell therapies in search of cures for debilitating and life-threatening disorders.

Dr. Shalem was one of the pioneers in using CRISPR genome-editing technology for genome-wide pooled screens and continues to develop novel screening and high-throughput approaches for studying protein quality control pathways and disease mechanisms of neurodegeneration.

The successful applicant with work closely with Dr. Shalem and the lab team including graduate students and postdocs and will be an integral and essential part of the lab. She/He will receive training in a range of techniques including molecular biology, cell culture, cell biology, high-throughput screens, genome editing, stem cell and differentiation protocols, next generation sequencing and data analysis.

Previous experience in biological research is required. Candidates with some computational background including R, Python and unix would be preferred. Self-motivation, and a keen interest in learning new techniques is a must!

Job Responsibilities

Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods

Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed

Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures

Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas

Modifies methods and protocols (in conjunction with PI)

Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes & reports the data

Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory

Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks

Presents & discusses work at weekly lab meetings and national symposia

Trains and mentors new staff as needed

Assists with determining work assignments, schedules and priorities

Assists in or prepares the writing of grants, journal articles, poster and oral presentations

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree

 

Required Experience: Two (2) years of laboratory experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Three (3) years of laboratory experience
  • Previous supervisory experience.
