Job Summary

Job Summary

As part of the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, the Lung Research Group at CHOP is dedicated to understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying lung diseases in children and adults. Ongoing studies in the Zepp laboratory aim to understand how the lung responds to environmental injury and how to repair damaged lung tissue. The Zepp lab is translating these findings to identify molecular targets in lung diseases. The Zepp lab takes a comprehensive approach that includes genetic mouse models, three-dimensional in vitro cell culture, live imaging, and molecular and transcriptomic profiling to interrogate novel cellular processes. We are looking for a new team member to become a central part of our work. The top qualities we’re looking for are a strong work ethic, a good team player, and enthusiasm to make fundamental scientific discoveries. We are a new laboratory with several highly skilled and passionate scientists that will work closely to coach and develop our new team members

The Research Technician will assist and play a central role in lab operations and protocols. About 50% of this position will involve the maintenance and genotyping of our mouse colony. This involves mouse handling, ear notching, DNA extraction, PCR, and good record keeping. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining an up-to-date online electronic database of the mouse colony. Additional work would include helping with general lab upkeep and data collection, analysis, and processing of lung tissue for histology and fluorescent imaging. Additional opportunities to design experiments, analyze data, or develop a project are available if training and time allows.

The ideal candidate will have a BS in Biology or related fields. Previous experience in mouse handling is preferred, and experience in standard laboratory techniques (pipetting, PCR, gel electrophoresis) is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will be well organized with great attention to detail and the ability to maintain precise notes of all experimental information in a hard-copy and digital format. The initial training period will be used to assess and develop a solid technical foundation. After this time, the ideal technician is expected to be able to work independently to effectively troubleshoot and communicate technical difficulties and work well with others in our Lung Research Group. Occasional work on weekends/evenings may be required. All lab members are expected to maintain a respectful and collegial academic environment.
