Job Summary

The Research Technician II with a Bachelor’s degree in the biological or chemical sciences or a related scientific discipline will participate in translational pediatric cancer and cardiovascular disease research projects under the direction of Dr. Michael Chorny (https://www.research.chop.edu/people/michael-chorny) and in collaboration with several other teams at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Chorny’s lab is focused on developing new, targeted delivery strategies for treating proliferative diseases. These efforts include the design and evaluation of drug, gene and cell delivery systems in experimental disease models, with a particular focus on aggressive pediatric cancers not responding to conventional therapies. Proficiency in tissue culture is required. Experience with cell and molecular biology techniques is preferred. After initial training, the individual is expected to independently perform cell culture experiments and assist with animal studies with minimal guidance from the principal investigator, participate in developing new experimental procedures and in preparation/submission of animal protocols, prepare abstracts for oral/poster presentations at scientific symposia, provide assistance with manuscripts and grant proposals, supervise less experienced research personnel, and oversee daily laboratory operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs routine tests under the direction of principal investigator or supervisor
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
  • Records and checks results for completeness and accuracy
  • Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Performs tasks that require familiarity with fundamental techniques and equipment
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Maintains office, lab area, reagents, supplies and equipment
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance on lab equipment
  • Coordinates schedules of tests & procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Conducts literary searches as directed

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Associates Degree

 

Required Experience: Nine (9) months of laboratory experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Eighteen (18) months of laboratory experience
  • Related internship experience.
