Job Summary

The BioRC Laboratory Technician II in the CHOP BioRepository Core (BioRC) will primarily be responsible carrying out automated and manual processes for nucleic acid extraction from tissue, specimen processing, and logistics for specimen labeling, accession, and storage. The BioRC Laboratory Technician II will be expected to become proficient at using the BioRC LIMS system as it relates to their work. The BioRC Laboratory Technician II will be expected ensure best practices and quality standards are followed. The individual will be committed to performing with integrity and accountability.

 

 

Our ideal candidate will...
1. Assists in carrying out RNA/DNA extractions from biospecimens (blood, tissue, saliva) involving operation of automated nucleic acid extraction instruments and associated sample preparation equipment.
2. Safely and proficiently accesses Liquid N2 storage systems and -80oC freezers for sample storage and retrieval. 
3. Performs sample processing (cell isolation, centrifugation, aliquotting).
4. Performs sample verification, labeling, accession, and data entry utilizing the BioRC laboratory information management system. 
5. Participates in Project Team Meetings and provides periodic updates on sample processing and status of projects.
6. Participates in a Contingency Plan to protect BioRepository samples.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs routine tests under the direction of principal investigator or supervisor
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
  • Records and checks results for completeness and accuracy
  • Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Performs tasks that require familiarity with fundamental techniques and equipment
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Maintains office, lab area, reagents, supplies and equipment
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance on lab equipment
  • Coordinates schedules of tests & procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Conducts literary searches as directed

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Associates Degree or active enrollment in a Bachelor’s Degree Program

 

Required Experience: Nine (9) months of laboratory experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

• Associate’s degree, 9 - 18 months laboratory experience required
• Relevant Internship experience considered
• BS degree in life science, medical science or related scientific discipline preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in in automated or manual nucleic acid extraction preferred.
• Experience in handling, processing, and managing biospecimens (Blood, DNA, RNA, tissue) preferred.
• Experience with laboratory information management systems and/or databases preferred.
 

Additional Technical Requirements
