Job Summary

The Research Psychologist is a doctoral level psychologist who serves primarily in a research capacity. This position is open to licensed psychologists as some of the duties involve clinical activities that occur in the context of research. Duties include: works under the mentorship of an established principal investigator to conduct research; develops own research with the guidance of the principal investigator; assists in the preparation of scientific publications and research grant proposals; collaborates and interacts with other researchers within the institution and at other institutions; serves as resource person for colleagues and as a mentor for less experienced personnel; may manage/supervise other research staff.

The Center for Autism Research (CAR) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a full time clinical or school psychologist to conduct clinical research evaluations at CAR. 

The Research Psychologist who is hired for this position will provide clinical assessment and research consultation services. Clinical assessment responsibilities include assessment of developmental / cognitive functioning and behavioral presentation, diagnostic classification, conducting verbal feedback of testing results, and timely write-up of assessment findings.  Significant experience in child development and the diagnostic classification of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and comorbid conditions is required.  The Research Psychologist may also supervise psychology trainees on their clinical responsibilities and provide training and consultation to staff.  Research consultation responsibilities including participating in project management, recording and analysis of data, and communication of research findings.     

Once licensed psychologists are credentialed by Medical Staff Affairs and have privileges to practice, additional duties may include: delivery of psychological interventions or administration of psychological assessments within research protocols; clinical supervision of personnel involved in clinical research activities; consultation to community providers who are engaged in clinical research activities. Credentialed psychologists will be required to complete ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE).

Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts research of significant scientific value relevant to their practice specialty.
  • Participates in the design, planning and conduct of psychological research.
  • Collaborates on data analysis and dissemination of findings.
  • Composes/assists in developing publications for peer reviewed, scientific journals.
  • Assists with the submission of applications for grants/contracts for funding of research projects.
  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds.
  • May participate in educational programs and teaching assignments.
  • Delivers interventions or conducts psychological assessments as part of research.
  • Assists in training and supervising internal staff and community-based clinicians who are delivering assessments or interventions as part of research.
  • Represents self in the Hospital (e.g., title on ID badge) as a psychologist.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Psychology license in PA or NJ depending on the location of the position, or receipt of licensure within 12 months of placement in position

Required Education and Experience


Required education: Doctoral degree in psychology (PhD, PsyD)
