Job Summary

A postdoctoral fellow position in Bioinformatics is open in the laboratory of Dr. Deanne Taylor in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHI) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  The research projects in Dr. Taylor’s group focus on using bioinformatics and computational biology for discovery of genetic and genomics processes affecting development and childhood diseases. We develop and utilize methods associated with single-cell dataset generation and analyses, multi-omics and ontological data integration and analysis,  and pediatric cancer and other rare disease genomics and genetics.  

 

The fellow will be working with other members of our group on projects to analyze single-cell multi-omics data and develop methods for analyzing cell states during growth and development.  

 

The fellow will attend weekly project meetings and interact daily with this multi-disciplinary team on a project-by-project basis.  The fellow also will have the full support and experience of more than 20 experienced bioinformatics scientists in our collegial and collaborative group. A  background in any quantitative STEM field is encouraged if accompanied by programming skills and an undergraduate understanding of biology.

 

Other application skills in bioinformatics, such as methods development and applications such as in machine learning or data integration efforts will be a plus, as would any experience in metabolic simulation.

 
The successful candidate should be able to work in cross-site teams on deadlines and have strong communication and listening skills. The candidate must be able to manage multiple projects and be prepared to work both independently and on collaborative efforts to complete projects within expected timelines.  The candidate should be ready to commit to full data and research reproducibility.
 
Interviewees will be asked to give a project presentation and complete a basic programming and analytical task as part of the interview process.
 

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

  • Programming experience in languages such as  R, Python, C, Java or Matlab. 
  • Familiarity with the Unix command-line environment.
  • Education and/or experience in statistical methods at a graduate level
  • Education and/or experience in molecular biology and/or biochemistry

Job Responsibilities

  1. Conduct independent scholarly research and develop new methods and protocols
  2. Participate in project planning, recording and evaluation of data
  3. Acquire technical, lab management and grant writing skills
  4. Participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentation at national meetings
  5. Supervise junior lab members
  6. Assist with other research projects

Required Education and Experience

  • A terminal degree PhD, MD, DVM, etc.
  • According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing
