Job Summary
  • Functions independently in a clinical research setting and is responsible for the complete coordination of assigned clinical research activities conducted within the CHOP healthcare network.
  • Uses clinical judgment in relation to study protocols.
  • Responsibilities may include CPR certification, CHOP mandatories and competencies for nurses, yearly Point of Care Testing, physical assessment, maintaining a current nursing license, vital signs, administering investigational drugs and accessing lines for labs, pharmacokinetic sampling, or other procedures as required by the study protocol.
  • Responsible for multiple projects and must possess full knowledge and understanding of all assigned clinical protocols.
  • Assignments may include Investigator-held IND/IDE trials
  • Will be expected to train, educate medical and clinical staff on protocol and regulatory responsibilities, and interact directly with sponsors (as appropriate).
  • Responsible to function with minimal supervision to conduct research activities, including: subject recruitment, confirmation of subject eligibility,  informed consent process, completion of case report forms, data clarification, IRB submissions, chart abstraction, hosting monitor visits, organizing site initiation visits, protocol feasibility assessments, protocol budget reviews.
  • Expected to meet enrollment projections within study specified time lines.
  • Hosts in-services on floors and may be assigned to assist a more junior coordinator with an in-service.
  • Expected to present at departmental staff meetings
  • Expected to participate on at least one departmental committee.
  • Must be knowledgeable on, have full understanding of, and promote good clinical practices (GCP) and will be held accountable for adherence to all policies and procedures surrounding these processes and for maintaining up to date knowledge on these policies from IRB, FDA, ICH, GCP, or other sources.
  • Must have ACRP certification or obtain this within 24 months of hire.
  • Will be expected to train and precept junior coordinators.
  • Will be encouraged to attend one related CCD class on an annual basis.
Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for full collaborative coordination of clinical research activity protocols at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) within the Division of Critical Care Medicine, Cardiac Intensive Care, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, or General Anesthesiology, and assists with the other divisions as needed.
  • Facilitates and participates in the following research activities: screening, enrollment, obtaining informed consent, data and specimen collection, data entry and clarification, preparation of relevant data sets and/or databases.
  • Participates in direct patient care only within the scope of assigned clinical research protocols.  Educate, coach, and assist in the development of other Research Coordinators, Research Assistants, students and volunteers.
  • Assists in new protocol development.  Participates in CQI activities and may facilitate research portion of divisional CQI meetings.  Completes Quality Improvement Reviews within the department as assigned.
  • Assists with grant and budget preparation.  Helps to support project financial management.
  • Communicates directly with Divisional Research Manager, PIs, and divisional research team.  Reports on status of studies under his/her direction.  Must be able to frequently interact in a supportive and optimistic manner with physicians, nurses, patients, subjects, families, The CHOP Research Institute, and support staff.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education:  Graduate of an NLN-accredited School of Nursing
 

According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of Diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing

 

Required Experience: Two (2) years clinical nursing experience.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education:  Bachelor’s Degree

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Two (2) to five (5) years of clinical nursing experience
  • Two (2) years clinical research experience
  • Pediatric and/or ICU nursing experience
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred but not required
