Job Summary

Faculty level investigator (PhD, MD or equivalent) with expertise in bioengineering (preferably biomechanics) and in large animal surgery for medical device testing. Experience in development of an animal model of thoracic insufficiency preferred. Should have familiarity with large animal imaging, histology (preparation and analysis), and pulmonary physiology. Must have proven track record of chest and/or spinal research. Experience in coordinating animal surgeries/imaging studies/ pulmonary function testing is preferable. Experience in supervising lab personnel desirable.

Job Responsibilities

  • Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software
  • Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, protocols, policies and procedures, and performance standards
  • Performs and directs broader research laboratory work
  • Provides direction regarding overall laboratory staffing and specific research projects
  • Plans projects and analyzes results, modifies methods and protocols
  • Directs personnel efforts in achieving the strategic plan for the laboratory
  • Ensures staff adheres to/maintains and implements department policies regarding procedures, objectives, safety etc.
  • In conjunction with the PI responsible for procurement of additional funding through grant writing and contributions to proposal development
  • Supervises senior technical staff and lab manager
  • Identifies and interviews candidates for open positions
  • Experienced in budgeting and forecasting

Required Education and Experience

  • MS with 8-10 years scientifically relevant experience required

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

  • Terminal degree (MD, PhD, DVM) Post-Doctoral Fellow experience preferred, 4-6 years scientifically relevant post-fellowship experience 

Additional Technical Requirements

  • 2-4 years staff management experience
  • 3-5 years laboratory direction / management experience required
