Job Summary

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine and The Center for Lung Research at CHOP are dedicated to understanding the mechanisms underlying lung diseases and developing new strategies to prevent and treat these disorders.  Studies in the Young laboratory encompass a spectrum of basic and patient-oriented research in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) and rare lung diseases and lung biology. Genetic mouse models and in vitro systems are utilized to understand the cell biology and mechanisms of ILD pathogenesis.  Longitudinal research cohorts of patients with rare lung diseases provide biospecimens for genetic discovery and translational studies, with a goal of applying that knowledge towards the development of therapies.  

In close collaboration with Dr. Young and the lab manager, the Research Assistant I performs key experiments utilizing murine models, human samples, and in vitro cell culture systems for molecular studies.

This position requires specialized education in the biological sciences, with proficiency in relevant techniques for in vivo and/or in vitro molecular studies.  The position requires exercise of discretion in the planning and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas
  • Modifies methods and protocols under the direction of the PI
  • Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes & reports the data
  • Presents & discusses work at weekly lab meetings
  • Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory
  • Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks
  • Assists in writing methods and setting-up protocols accurately under the direction of the program director or senior scientist
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, safety procedures and compliance records
  • Researches journal, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information
  • Assists with the preparation of data for publication or presentation at symposia
  • May supervises junior members of laboratory.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, 3-5 years scientifically relevant experience

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Proficient in various research and/or analytical techniques required
