Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Our laboratory focuses on using human embryonic stem cell and iPS cell models to study human development and disease.  The position is for projects studying the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into hematopoietic and endodermal lineages.

Applicants must have a PhD or MD degree in the biological or physical sciences. Prior laboratory experience in cell culture, basic molecular biology, and flow cytometry is preferred.

Specific duties will include the maintenance and differentiation of human embryonic stem and iPS cell lines with one of the project goals being to define methods to expand megakaryocyte/erythrocyte progenitor populations derived from stem cell sources using CRISPR/Cas9 mediated genome engineering and other transgenic approaches.  In addition, a second project is available to study pancreatic endocrine cell development with the human stem cell system and develop in vitro models of diabetes.

The ideal applicant will be an enthusiastic and self-driven individual, committed to learning and working with a team to contribute to advances in biology and medicine.  He or she will be capable of effective data recording, demonstrate good organizational and communication skills and independently lead a research project.  The position is available immediately, with some flexibility for a later start date.

The postdoctoral fellow will, under the direction/guidance of a mentor (principal investigator), assume responsibility for a specific, on-going research project.  The postdoc experience will serve to extend, refine and enhance skills necessary for professional and career development, and will enable the individual to broaden his/her scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. It is expected that this individual will conduct independent scholarly research, and will contribute directly to the overall research goals of the project and the research group.  Postdocs will be expected to participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. Postdocs will also be expected to acquire technical, lab management, and manuscript/grant writing skills; and participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings.  Postdoctoral fellows also may be required to supervise junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research, and assist with the development of other research projects in the lab.
