Res Post Doc Fellow - Neurology

Philadelphia, PA, US, 19104

Job Type:

Req ID: 25213

Shift: Days

Employment Status: AF - Active - Regular - Full Time

Job Summary

A postdoctoral fellow (postdoc) in biomedical optics is now available at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The fellow will carry out research that advances clinical utility of diffuse optical technologies for guiding pediatric blood perfusion therapies. These clinical situations arise, for example, for patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), among other scenarios. The fellow would carry out their research under the guidance of Daniel Licht and Wesley Baker. The fellow would also be an integral member of a highly interdisciplinary research team and would have opportunities to address a diverse range of research challenges including: (1) opto-mechanical and electro-optic design of probes for real-time clinical measurements of cerebral hemodynamics; (2) data analysis (modeling, machine learning) to identify patterns in optical data predictive of outcome; (3) pilot pre-clinical research in piglet models and (4) clinical measurements in children to demonstrate efficacy of optically-directed management of extracorporeal perfusion; and (5) development of understanding of cerebral hemodynamic data from patients and piglet models to illuminate etiologies of neurological injury during extracorporeal perfusion. During the course of the program, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to contribute to grant proposals, to supervise junior lab members, and to publish his/her research. The postdoctoral experience will serve to extend, refine and enhance skills necessary for professional career development in academia or industry.

The ideal candidate will have experience with:

  • A productive publication record in the field of diffuse optics.
  • Programming experience in systems engineering software (e.g., Labview).
  • Programming experience in data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB).

Job Responsibilities

  1. Conduct independent scholarly research and develop new methods and protocols
  2. Participate in project planning, recording and evaluation of data
  3. Acquire technical, lab management and grant writing skills
  4. Participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentation at national meetings
  5. Supervise junior lab members
  6. Assist with other research projects

Required Education and Experience

  • A terminal degree PhD, MD, DVM, etc.
  • According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing
