Job Summary

Plan and provide professional nursing care for ambulatory infectious disease patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.  Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the State Board of Nursing and health system standards.  Also supports operations through some administrative duties. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans nursing care for infectious disease patients in the out-patient setting; collects and analyzes patient data; makes recommendations for nursing care plans; establishes interpersonal relationships with patients; evaluates nursing care given and communicates to proper personnel relevant facts about patients according to standards of care.
  • Delegates tasks and supervises the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Provide direction and guidance in the proper use, care and control of material resources; appraise quality and effectiveness of material and equipment and report results to clinical leadership; maintain standards of cleanliness in assigned areas.
  • Observe clinical activities related to nursing and clinic flow and make recommendations to manager for improvement in the quality and effectiveness of nursing care given.
  • Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.  Acts as a preceptor and supports the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Demonstrates commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing nurse practices to enhance safety.  Shares errors through system reporting mechanisms and demonstrates shared accountability for safe practices.
  • Performs telephone triage:
    • Utilizing clinical judgement and the nursing process,
    • Is guided by medically approved decision support tools (protocols), to determine the urgency of the patient’s problem and direct the patient to the appropriate level of care
    • This plan is ideally developed in collaboration with the caller and includes patient education/advice as appropriate and necessary
    • Documents encounters using the nursing process and Hospital policy in EPIC.
  • Performs administrative and other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

RN - Registered Nurse
CPR - Certified Pulmonary Recuscitation

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Graduation from an ACEN and/or CCNE accredited school of nursing or college.


Required Experience: At least two (2) years of prior nursing experience or BSN with at least 6 months nursing experience.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic


Preferred Experience: Pediatric experience.

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Ability to provide comprehensive nursing care to children with moderate to complex problems. 
  • Ability to work in a team setting with multiple responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of EpicCare preferred.


Computer Competency

  • Basic use of a computer (mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports).
  • Basic use of Microsoft Office (Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and Skype).
  • Web browsing, intranet search, document access.
  • Use of shared network file space.
  • Basic use of patient facing technology. (e.g. IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors).
  • Navigation and use of clinical communication systems.


Information Literacy

  • Determines the nature and extent of clinical information needed and uses the appropriate technology to access it.
  • Accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
  • Evaluates information and its sources critically and appropriately incorporates it into clinical practice.
  • Evaluates outcomes of the use of information.


Information Management Literacy

  • Navigation of the electronic health record system.
  • Ability to locate and review specific patient data in various clinical information systems.
  • Effectively uses clinical decision support tools.
  • Understands policies and procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations regarding the use of clinical information systems.
  • Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
