Job Summary

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute is recruiting a new team to build a data and informatics program called “Arcus” that will link clinical and biological data and provide world-class computational tools to solve the most challenging problems in child health.   Recognizing the central role of data to the future of pediatric research, CHOP leadership and the Board of Trustees committed to a funding plan, and Arcus was launched in July 2017.  The Arcus team integrates with major scientific initiatives in the Research Institute Strategic Plan: Lifespan, Rare Diseases, Novel Devices and Therapeutics, and Precision Health.  We seek mission-oriented professionals with interest and expertise in the areas of biomedical science, library science, data education, data science, cloud computing, data privacy, and security.

Job Responsibilities

The Data Engineer II in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) develops and implements innovative software and applications that solve challenging problems in the collection, management, analysis and interpretation of biomedical, genomic and clinical data. This role will work on a small team focused on architecting and implementing a cloud-native “data platform” to support the goals of Arcus.

 

We are looking for highly creative people who share our mission to advance child health and who will thrive in a continuous learning environment, acquiring and applying both new technical skills and biomedical domain knowledge.  Specifically, the Data Engineer II will:

 

1. Innovate solutions that have a high impact on data-intensive clinical and translational research.
2. Design, test, and maintain software implementing these innovative as part of the Arcus data platform.
3. Build and deploy applications via a continuous integration and delivery pipeline.
4. Manage and scale applications using container technology and cloud hosted managed services.
5. Disseminate novel software through academic and non-academic channels as open source.
6. Continuously learn about a wide variety of biomedical domains in order to translate domain requirements into high-impact technical solutions.
7. Communicate with clinical and biomedical researchers to discover use cases.
8. Mentor junior staff, student workers, co-ops, and research trainees (fellows, post-docs). 

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree

 

Required Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of programming experience with progressively more complex projects.
  • Previous experience with continuous learning and adoption of new languages and frameworks.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in quality assurance, continuous integration and deployment, configuration management, or other aspect of software and application validation.
  • Previous experience of staying current by evaluating and implementing the latest and greatest QA/CID tools and processes.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

 

Preferred Education: Master’s degree in computer science, biomedical engineering, information science, or related field

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Four (4) or more years of programming experience with progressively more complex projects.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience developing, configuring, or customizing software in a clinical environment.

                                                                                                                     

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: Epic Certifications

Additional Technical Requirements

1. Experience using Go in production is strongly recommended.
2. Proficient in at least one additional language, such as Python, JavaScript, or any functional language.
3. Expert knowledge of one or more database technologies, relational and/or non-relational database.
4. Experience with using continuous integration and delivery.
5. Experience with working in cloud environments and container-based technologies.
6. Frontend design and/or user experience skills are a plus.
7. Experience with domain-driven design and related patterns is a plus.
