Job Summary

The 10 week Nurse Extern program enables the nursing student to refine their nursing skills, become acquainted with the clinical setting on a variety of units, apply academic knowledge to practice, work with nurse preceptors, and participate in educational seminars. The 2023 externship will run from May 22, 2023 through July 28, 2023. 

 

Under the direct supervision of an RN, the Nurse Extern participates in the delivery of nursing care to patients. This position exists within the content of a time-limited student experience. Works within the clinical nursing area in a support role, assisting nursing staff in the provision of care to pediatric patients and their families. The program is open to students enrolled in an RN nursing program and must be within 12 months of graduation by the start of the program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (inclusive of previous Spring and Summer semesters) is required.

 

We are encouraging applicants from Nursing Diploma programs, ASN, and BSN programs. 

 

Program requirements: 

  • This is a full time work opportunity, you must be available to work all 10 weeks. 
  • You should be available to work rotating nights and weekends. 
  • Active enrollment in a nursing diploma program, ASN, or BSN program.
    • This role prefers applicants who are at most 12 months away from graduating their nursing program from May 2023. 
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Job Responsibilities

  • Under RN supervision, assists in the provision of care to patients and families. Follows Nursing Process to deliver safe care: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Responds promptly and positively to patients, families, associates, and all others in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner.
  • Follows hospital and departmental procedures and policies, including but not limited to patient safety, mandatory education, confidentiality, and attendance.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills and use monitoring equipment, under direct supervision of RN/Preceptor.
  • Demonstrates high standards of professionalism by maintaining a professional image in all he/she does.
  • Responsible for efficient and cost-effective utilization of hospital resources.
  • Identifies own learning needs and obtains necessary education to meet requirements of position.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

CPR Certification issued through an organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross)

Required Education and Experience

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Enrollment in an RN nursing program 

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:

  • Work experience in a healthcare setting
