Job Summary

The Operations Manager has the overall responsibility for ensuring the Department of Environmental and Linen Service’s safekeeping mission is accomplished, on behalf of the multi disciplinary/diverse customer base.  
 
Within this role the Operations Manager has the responsibility for daily operations and short and long term planning for all program development, as well as ensuring all operations remain effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible according to department policy and procedures in conjunction with external regulatory guidelines.  
 
Responsible for the coordination of the Environmental Services operational processes / functions in order to expedite patient flow through enhanced inter/intra departmental coordination and communication.  

Job Responsibilities

Responsible for all the (safe) Environmental and Linen Operational Requirements of the Division.

  • Supervises all Environmental Services supervisors assigned to shift operations by maintaining visibility in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs daily rounds, does quality assessment tours and solicits employee/customer feedback with respect to environmental conditions.
  • Directs all inter/intra divisional Environmental Services shift operations, and ensures that all assigned departmental assigned services/responsibilities are provided in accordance with established protocols.
  • Serves as a member of any appropriate/assigned process improvement team as a key representative of Environmental and Linen Services as deemed necessary for process improvement.
  • Ensures appropriate /safe use of cleaning equipment and supplies consistent with regulatory standards and fiscal resources.
  • Assures that all environmental services personnel demonstrate the correct and safe use of cleaning products in conjunction with safety and infection control policies.
  • Shares recurring problems identified by customer input with appropriate department head, and recommends solutions.
  • Manages all “divisional assigned” full and part time staff, exempt and non-exempt, (bargaining and non-bargaining) with regards to scheduling, training and performance evaluations.
  • Responsible for ensuring key objects of hospital strategic plan for patient flow meets/exceeds annual targets consistently.

Intra-Departmental Service Coordination

  • Coordinates and supports environmental projects both on an intra/inter departmental basis such as Project Management/Facilities/Customer projects that impact on the daily operations of the hospital.
  • Manages long and short term projects, and “environmental/linen housekeeping” issues that potentially impact the cleanliness of the hospital.
  • Monitors divisional waste programs to ensure environmental compliance for division /intra hospital and external waste removal and disposal systems.
  • Assists/supports/recommends to departmental leadership with operational planning by developing committees to address specific divisional/department/shift service issues for ultimate process improvement.
  • Assists/supports/recommends to departmental leadership new training programs for more effective/safe environmental/linen waste practices.
  • Nurtures and maintains a proactive/positive working relationship/partnership with all departments/”customers” throughout “organization” to ensure complete understanding of the environmental and linen/waste services required. Ensures a quick response to uncommon services requested.
  • Ensures departmental representation with all “other” appropriate CHOP departments for the “fact finding” and any subsequent required follow up involving any situation beyond normal scope defined/approved protocols and practices.
  • Ensures100% of staff fulfill hospital mandatory education requirements.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Human Resources

  • Recommends new policies and procedures to reflect organizational changes and support the “safe” delivery of services needs and requirements.
  • Submits policy/procedure drafts to the Director.
  • Reviews with senior management policy/procedure recommendations from subordinates.
  • Completes and submits annual performance evaluations for subordinates as CHOP protocol dictates.
  • Reviews/approves/denies assistant managers and subordinates schedules and staff request for time off when beyond “norm” agreed upon.
  • Reviews all discipline and develops improvement plans for subordinates whenever a performance problem exists.
  • Develops rewards and recognition program for good performance.
  • Responds within 24 hours of any complaints received.
  • Ensures compliance with Collective Bargaining Unit 1199c agreement.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: High School/GED

 

Required Experience:                                            

  • Proven track record of direct personnel management within a complex and challenging environment.
  • Proven track record of enhanced multi-disciplinary customer service interactions.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Bachelors                                                                       

 

Preferred Experience:                                                                  

  • Proven track record within a large healthcare/hospitality or customer orientated organization.
  • Minimum of overall seven (7) years progressive managerial/people management experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years independent managerial experience at a senior level.
     

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: CHESP

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Ability to work independently within established CHOP/Departmental objectives/guidelines.
  • Ability to influence, direct and guide others so as to gain their loyal cooperation in the accomplishment of an objective.
  • Ability to develop ongoing development of new or existing staff members.
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations and data analysis to include, but not limited to utilizing graphs/spreadsheets/charts etc.
  • Ability to remain calm and poised with a high degree of emotional security, even under provocation.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to exercise considerable initiative, good judgement and diplomacy at all times.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to prepare and present to varying audiences, including but not limited to subordinates, peers, and external bodies.
