Job Summary

The Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship serves as an integral member of the Foundation’s team by providing leadership and creating a supportive environment for fundraising and stewardship in a fast-paced, ambitious development team charged with raising $165 million annually by 2027. They will work in partnership with the Executive Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship to develop, organize, implement, and assess a comprehensive tiered strategy for stewardship of donors at all giving levels. They will design and execute comprehensive strategies for a best-in-class donor relations program and collaborate closely with other development staff to enhance donor relations towards our vision of best-in-class donor relations and stewardship experiences for donors to the CHOP Foundation. This position will report to the Executive Director, Donor Relations and Stewardship.

Job Responsibilities

1. Direct Donor Relations and Stewardship function for fundraising department reaching over 90,000 donors annually

  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, Donor Relations and Stewardship, develop and direct a strategic, donor-focused stewardship program for donors at all levels of giving.
  • Collaborate closely with Directors of Development in developing, implementing, and evaluating individual engagement plans for donors at select giving levels.
  • Partner with Executive Director, Development Technology and Analytics and Executive Director, Donor Relations and Stewardship to develop technological solutions to create maximum efficiencies and analytics to inform donor stewardship strategies.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

  • Oversee Donor Recognition Programs, including the Chairman’s Circle, Founders Society, and Lewis and 1855 Societies, in conjunction with relevant Foundation partners.
  • Work with key stakeholders to establish donor recognition opportunities, guidelines and policies.
  • Coordinate and track donor recognition signage across the enterprise including exterior and interior signs, donor walls, and other recognition vehicles.
  • Partner with Board and Volunteer Relations on effective engagement of key Foundation volunteers, including but not limited to the Foundation Board of Overseers.
  • Develop, oversee, execute, and evaluate annual stewardship processes for all donors, including for acknowledgments, endowment reports, impact reports, welcome packets, and other outreach.
  • Help measure the effectiveness of existing stewardship activities and proactively recommend new tools that boldly convey the impact donors have on CHOP.

2. Plan and Coordinate Stewardship Events

Collaborate closely with Director of Events and other stakeholders to plan and carry out stewardship-focused events such as the annual Chairman’s Circle event

3. Create, Implement and Sustain Policies, Processes and Procedures

  • Establish policies and procedures surrounding new and ongoing stewardship projects and practices, working closely with Individual Giving, Institutional and Events. Fundraising, Campaign, Board and Volunteer Relations, and Foundation leadership
  • Establish systems and guidelines by which to submit donor relations and stewardship requests, track status and complete projects efficiently and effectively, working closely with the Data Services team.
  • Establish donor recognition opportunities, guidelines, and policies by working closely with Foundation leadership.

4. Supervise Growing Team of Donor Relations and Stewardship professionals

Provide leadership and development to a team of four or more positions including Associate Director of Stewardship, Assistant Directors of Donor Relations and Stewardship, and Correspondence Writer.

Required Education and Experience


At least seven (7) years of relevant experience in advancement/development or related field

Supervisory experience

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:

At least five (5) years’ experience in a supervisory role

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Experience in planning, writing, editing, and producing acknowledgments, endowment reports, impact reports, and other stewardship communications
  • Experience working in a highly complex environment
  • Comfort and experience with interacting with a broad range of constituents, including executives and other senior leaders
  • Extensive, high-level writing, editing and proofreading skills; thorough knowledge of grammar and usage, AP Style.
  • Knowledge of fund-raising principles.
  • Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and Outlook required
  • A sincere appreciation for people and how they are each uniquely motivated.
  • Poised and engaging, empathetic communications style based on natural warmth and enthusiasm.
  • Fast-paced and results oriented with the ability to work in a timely manner with multiple deadlines and competing requirements.
  • Strong written, presentation, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstration of good judgement, professionalism and the highest standards of ethical conduct.
