Job Summary

The Web Technologies and Data Integration team is seeking talented engineers to design, build, maintain, and support solutions for accelerating discovery and advancements in child health. We are looking for candidates who are highly collaborative team players, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and are committed to providing a high-level of customer service to the CHOP community for the position of DevOps Engineer I.


The DevOps Engineer I will be joining a team that is building software and infrastructure for handling large and complex CHOP websites and backend office applications, in an Agile development environment. Your role will focus on implementing applications’ build, release, deployment, and configuration activities and for configuring, maintaining, and monitoring the server infrastructure on which the applications reside. They DevOps Engineer must be able to adjust to business change as well as interact, develop, engineer, and communicate collaboratively with clients, vendors, partners across most levels of CHOP staff. In addition, the DevOps Engineer will be able to:
1.    Displays understanding of current technologies and concepts within their discipline
2.    Demonstrates basic expertise in implementation, integration, troubleshooting, and evolution of complex system architectures in tiered environments.
3.    Demonstrates basic knowledge of support within their discipline. Uses Electronic workflow management system to resolve customer incidents. 
4.    Demonstrates knowledge of applications and networking including load balancing applications and the ability to ensure fault tolerance for applications.
5.    Demonstrates attention to detail in problem-solving, documentation, and record keeping.  
6.    Exhibits expertise in monitoring systems hardware and recommending necessary upgrades.
7.    Works under direct supervision to accomplish daily assignments in support of team initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Support a fast paced 24x7 Day-to-day systems operations. Participates in on-call rotation for 24/7 coverage and able to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends).
  2. Resolves connectivity issues and troubleshoot all server-related problems.

  3. Follows escalation procedures to document and notify appropriate support staff, equipment vendors, or other contact involved parties and notifies management as appropriate.

  4. Creates and maintains systems documentation.

  5. Communicates production problems to affected users as appropriate.

  6. Monitors system hardware and application performance and capacity and proactively recommends enhancements/upgrades to ensure hosts stay in acceptable ranges.

  7. Ensures fixes, patches and upgrades are applied to the software that serves the application.

  8. Provides IT Team Lead with statistics and information to assure adherence to hospital computing standards and policies.

  1. Participate in the installation, maintenance and support of installations.
  2. Research and execute performance tuning and optimization activities under the guidance of senior team members.
  3. Participates in infrastructure maintenance & refresh activities as defined by the maintenance calendar

The department works approximately 80% remotely, 20% on site on an as-needed basis.  

Required Education and Experience

HS Diploma or GED

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Bachelor's degree

 

At least one (1) year of experience performing system administration and engineering for one of the following systems red hat linux, UNIX, Windows, IBM, HDS, Citrix, Infrastructure as a service/ Cloud and Virtualization technologies (XenApp, Vmware, Microsoft Server)

Additional Technical Requirements

Citrix Concentration:  Exposure to information processing principles, practices and demonstrated experience with troubleshooting and resolving Citrix problems and errors. Some experience with scripting and automating execution of configuration and data collection tasks utilizing tools and languages.

 

Windows Concentration:   Exposure to information processing principles, practices and demonstrated experience with troubleshooting and resolving Microsoft technology problems and errors. Some experience with scripting and automating execution of configuration and data collection tasks utilizing tools and languages such as VB-Script, WMI, ADSI, Power Shell or similar tools. Some  hands-on expertise with, Win  Server, Active Directory, other Microsoft BackOffice products and Server virtualization. Demonstrates understanding of MS Windows O/S networking technology including Domains, Trusts, Active Directory sites, Security, DHCP, DDNS, IIS, ISA. Knowledge of Kerberos protocol client-server exchange.

 

Red Hat Linux, AIX Concentration: Exposure to information processing principles, practices and demonstrated experience with troubleshooting and resolving OS technology problems and errors. Some experience with scripting and automating execution of configuration and data collection tasks

 

SAN Concentration: Experience and knowledge of SAN and NAS environments preferred. At least one (1) year hands-on experience with large SAN installation. Previous experience (3-5 years) supporting Server Platforms. Knowledge of

OS platforms as it relates to mounting and managing LUN's and HBA configuration. Familiarity with multi-pathing and volume management software.

Cloud Concentration:  exposure to cloud infrastructure, virtualization and orchestration infrastructure, principles and demonstrated experience with troubleshooting and resolving technology problems and errors.

Monitoring Concentration: Experience and knowledge of monitoring tools, and functionality, Exposure to analyzing trends, setting thresholds and alerting.   Some hands on experience with OS / technology listed above.

To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community. In keeping with this, CHOP has mandated all workforce members on site at any CHOP location for any portion of their time be vaccinated for COVID-19. This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations. The CHOP COVID-19 vaccine mandate is in alignment with applicable local, state and federal mandates.

CHOP also requires all workforce members who work in patient care buildings or who provide patient care to receive an annual influenza vaccine. Employees may request exemption consideration for CHOP vaccine requirements for valid religious and medical reasons.
