Job Summary

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute “Arcus” program links clinical and biological data and provides services and tools to researchers to help solve the most challenging problems in child health.  The Arcus Library Science team supports this mission by providing assistance to researchers in archiving, describing, organizing and managing their data.
We seek a professional who can provide leadership for the archival data services that support the Arcus program’s mission to provide advance collaborative research, innovation, and discovery through the linking of CHOP’s clinical and research data.  This role will lead the development and application of standards and practices for manipulating, validating, cleaning, and staging complex research collections. They will be responsible for working with disparate data types and formats including genomic data, biosample data, audiovisual files, code objects, clinical datasets, and more.  As a member of the Arcus Library Science team, the candidate will collaborate closely both with researchers and with the digital archivists to learn about the needs for long-term data preservation and reuse. The Data Integration Analyst will fill a crucial role between the digital archivists and the research teams themselves, acting as a data liaison and expert to arrange and validate data contributions to the Arcus Archives.  The incumbent will also be responsible for collaboratively improving existing workflows and developing new workflows for archiving novel data types, incorporating feedback from bioinformatics communities and other research areas to identify important changes.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

•    Lead the development and implementation of standards for manipulating, validating, cleaning, and staging data and files that comprise complex research collections
•    Work with bioinformatics experts and other end users/clients to understand specific needs in bioinformatics end user domains. 
•    Think critically and creatively to identify areas of improvement in existing internal and external data handling processes 
•    Serve as the data liaison to research efforts and other institutional groups interested in contributing data to the archives
•    Operate independently, with supervision primarily provided for more complex projects and collaborations
•    Collaborate with Library Science team members on the application of data handling practices as part of Research Data Management consultations
•    Develop, test, and maintain the custom scripts, tools, and workflows required to automate, standardize, and validate the organization of research content into structured and documented collections
•    Develop and maintain documentation in support of research data staging and organization workflows
•    Collaborate with members of the Arcus Library Science team and other Arcus teams to design updates to the Archival Management System and other Arcus applications in support of better data handling practices
•    Monitor data and biomedical fields for relevant developments in standards and processes.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelors in Computer Science, Information Science, Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Science or a related discipline. 


Required Experience: At least three (3) years of experience in database development, database administration, data management, or related discipline, with progressively more complex projects

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Masters in Computer Science, Information Science, Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Science or a related discipline. 


Preferred Experience:

  • Four (4) or more years of experience in database development, database administration, data management, or related discipline, with progressively more complex projects preferably in a biomedical science or healthcare environment. 
  • Experience with source code management, continuous integration, containerization, and automated testing tools and processes is preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in data modeling, ETL, and applications of highly dimensional data types such as derived from genomics and observational clinical or human subjects research data preferred.

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Working knowledge of SQL required.
  • Working knowledge of relational database management systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle required.
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following preferred: Python/Django, JavaScript/HTML (as used in Single Page Applications), Java, Scala.
  • Working knowledge of biomedical or healthcare data standards such as HL7, ICD, CPT, SNOMED preferred.
  • Must exhibit excellent oral, presentation, and written communication skills.
