Job Summary

As part of the BioRepository Resource Center and working closely with the Enterprise Informatics Group in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) and the Research Information Services group at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute, the Data Integration Analyst I for Research Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) will be involved in supporting the CHOP Biobanking Strategic Initiative.  The Strategic Initiative is aimed at centralizing CHOP’s biobanking efforts and improving the breadth and access to biobank information resources. 


The Data Integration Analyst I - LIMS will be responsible for helping to customize and implement Thermo-Fisher Nautilus LIMS in support of BioRC and Strategic Initiative needs, including laboratory workflows, instrument integration, biospecimen data, sample accession,  tracking, and storage.  This person will partner to perform data quality control activities, create SOPs, test scripts, and training materials. They will also create and maintain necessary LIMS system documentation including user requirement specifications, detailed design specifications, configuration test plans and summary reports, etc.  The Data Integration Analyst I - LIMS will work closely with the BioRC to help design, implement, and test complex Nautilus workflows, templates (for specimens, tests, and results), and reports based on Resource Center needs and College of American Pathologist (CAP) accreditation requirements.  The Data Integration Analyst I - LIMS will assist with end-user training and education, trouble-shooting, and support of the Nautilus LIMS system. The Data Integration Analyst I - LIMS will constantly review and improve systems to achieve optimal operation and institutional goals.  They will also help assure that all licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in supporting Thermo-Fisher Nautilus LIMS, including laboratory workflows, instrument integration, and biospecimen data as it relates to sample accession, tracking, and storage across the Research Institute.
  • Help design and implement Nautilus LIMS workflows, templates (for specimen collection, accession, tests, and results), and reports based on BioRC and Research Institute needs, and CAP requirements.
  • Design and perform data import, export, updates and quality control procedures as related to biospecimen data in the Nautilus LIMS database.
  • Perform testing and documentation of changes or enhancements to the LIMS systems in support of CAP requirements and Research Institute needs.
  • Assist with creation of SOPs, end-user training, and education.
  • Provide end-user support of Nautilus LIMS in areas such as label and barcode printing, account creation, Infomaker report creation, and data entry/modification.
  • Quickly acquire biomedical domain knowledge in order to understand requirements for LIMS integration, optimization to meet Resource Center and Research Institute needs.
  • Manage small projects and subprojects within larger initiatives, identifying, tracking, and reporting on tasks and deliverables against project timelines.
  • Work as part of a project team in a highly matrixed research environment, including direct interaction with clinicians and biomedical researchers.
Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Life Sciences or related scientific or information technology field.


Required Experience: Experience in database development, database administration, data management, or related discipline, preferably in a biomedical science or healthcare environment.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:

  • Relevant experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) such as Nautilus, LabVantage, STAR LIMS or Soft.
  • Experience using database reporting tools: SQL server, Tableau, Infomaker, etc.
Additional Technical Requirements
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL: Oracle preferred.
  • Relevant higher level experience with Microsoft Excel (macros, VB etc.).
  • Knowledge of laboratory workflows or experience within a healthcare environment desired.
  • Knowledge of enterprise software on Windows Platforms.
  • Understanding of an academic/research medical center’s unique clients and needs, and how that translates into design, implementation, and support considerations regarding a laboratory system.
