Job Summary

Under the direction of the Quality Manager and the Core Lab leadership in the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine, the Core Lab Laboratory Based Quality Specialist works to improve quality assurance and quality improvement processes in his/her technical area within the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine.  S/he monitors and works to improve the quality of testing processes, pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical to achieve quality excellence.  The Core Lab Quality Specialist enjoys coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to improve processes.  S/he learns quickly, works independently, and is relentless in the quest for continual quality improvement.

                                                                                                                                                

Job Responsibilities
  1. Lead and/or manage quality improvement projects and activities internal and external to the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
  2. Performs scheduled and focused audits as required. Develops audit plans/checklists and generates reports detailing findings for submission to management.
  3. Reviews quality management plans and other applicable policies and procedures.
  4. Reviews and tracks, trends, and analyzes non-conformances. 
  5. Prepares and presents quality management reports and participates in the monthly Clinical Laboratory CQI meeting, and other institutional committees, facilitating periodic quality management meetings as requested by management.
  6. Actively identifies and pursues learning needs. Actively participates in laboratory section continuing education/quality assurance meetings by providing instructional support and presentations.
  7. Actively participates in change initiatives.  Understands how to utilize own actions and contributions to support organizational, departmental and section goals

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
Required Education and Experience
  • Required Education: Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or other appropriate science related fields.                                                                           
  • Required Experience: 3- 5 years experience in quality improvement, and quality management education.     
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
  • Preferred Experience:  Formal training in lean six sigma, with experience in lean six sigma methodologies, knowledge of and/or experience in data tracking, trending and statistical process control analysis. 
  • High degree of familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
  • Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: ASCP certification.
Additional Technical Requirements
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, exercising discretion and judgement
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and collaborate with others
  • Interpersonal skills to work with staff and leaders
  • Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines
