Job Summary

The Mitochondrial Medicine Frontier Program (MMFP), within the Departments of Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Attending Physician and Clinical Research Director in either the (non-tenure) clinician-educator or academic clinician faculty track.  The CHOP MMFP is an active and expanding clinical center charged with improving the integration of multi-disciplinary clinical care with clinical and translational research to improve the health for patients of all ages with mitochondrial disease.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of people with mitochondrial diseases.  He/she will direct a multi-disciplinary clinical research program that includes physician leads, clinical research coordinators, and support staff.  Candidates who desire appointment in the clinician-educator track should have a documented record of scholarly achievement.  The latter is not required of those appointed to the academic clinician track.  Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.

The MMFP Clinical Research Director will supervise clinical research study coordinators and data integration analyst, lead multi-disciplinary clinical research meetings, and interface with diverse colleagues in the CRSO and across different domains to support research in children and adults with mitochondrial disease.  The MMFP Clinical Research Director will provide outpatient and inpatient clinical care and actively participate in the training and education of medical students, residents, fellows, and colleagues.  The MMFP Clinical Research Director will also participate in the clinical activities, including involvement in the on-call weekday, night, and weekend consult schedule of the MMFP Clinical Center.  The MMFP Clinical Director will be an active participant in negotiation and active participation in clinical trials of novel therapies, biomarkers, and diagnostics for mitochondrial diseases.

Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D. degree and demonstrated excellent qualifications in clinical care and education.  Experience in clinical or translational research is desirable.  Applicants must be board-certified in Medical Genetics, Biochemical Genetics, Neurology, or other clinical domain of direct relevance to Mitochondrial Disease.

Job Responsibilities

Direct Clinical Activities

  • Provide direct patient care to a panel of patients in the practice.
  • May supervise clinical providers including resident physicians and nurse practitioners and provide performance feedback in all aspects of clinical functions.
  • Supervise and ensure high quality of all clinical care services provided in the practice. 
  • Continually review current pediatric standards of care and work with leadership team to implement new processes as needed.  Respond to clinical alerts and updates from public health officials and others.

 

Educational Activities (if indicated)

  • May provide support and leadership for resident/medical student education curriculum and program implementation.  

 

Research Activities (if indicated)

  • May participate in and/or oversee research activities, as needed, at the practice and provide feedback and consultation for studies as they progress. Delegate operational functions to other support staff as needed to accomplish the research goals and objectives. 

 

Administrative Activities (if indicated)

  • May assist with management of  the Practice:
    • Evaluate and effectively manage patient access, patient flow, quality improvement, staff performance, effective work teams.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of departmental standards, policies, guidelines and protocols.

Current DEA License
Board Certified in subspecialty
Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Graduate of a GMEC-accredited Medical School and Pediatric Residency (and/or Fellowship as indicated) Program. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
Additional Technical Requirements
  • Working knowledge of hospital policies, practices and protocols as well as applicable regulations and guidelines.  Knowledge of computer systems and applications.
  • Skills in exercising initiative, judgment, problem solving, decision-making.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective relationships with medical and administrative staff, patients and the public.
  • Ability to research and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and electronic).
