Clinical Lab Assistant I - Phlebotomist

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Lead and Supervisor: perform outpatient phlebotomy, process laboratory specimens, data entry, and specimen transport as ordered by the respective physicians. Must exhibit the ability to work independently and provide customer service using CHOP ICARE values and Service Standards. The percentage of allocation for Phlebotomy and Central Lab Services job responsibilities is determined by lab leadership.

Hiring for inpatient and outpatient.  Inpatient hours are Monday-Friday 4:30am-1pm alternating weekends, training will mimic the same schedule; outpatient is 9:30am-6pm Monday-Friday and alternating weekends, training is 8am-4:30pm for at least 8 weeks. 

Job Responsibilities

Phlebotomy - Outpatient

  • Identify patient as per established procedures
  • Review orders in the hospital information system and laboratory information system and release orders
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy following established procedures
  • Correctly label specimens and verify patient identity

 

Central Lab Services - Specimen Processing

  • Assess specimen requirements and specimen integrity
  • Triage, accession, process, and deliver specimens following established procedures
  • Store specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives as needed

 

Customer Service

Face-to-face

  • Guided by CHOP ICARE Values and Service Standards
  • Interfacing with patients, laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendors
  • Provide a patient-centric collaborative experience
  • Diffuse anger or frustration, aim to provide solutions
  • Answer questions and provide support

Phone

  • Proper phone etiquette following established procedures
  • Ensure a warm tone of voice
  • Diffuse anger or frustration, aim to provide solutions
  • Answer question and provide support
  • Call critical lab values to clinician

Specimen handling

  • Treat each specimen as a person
  • Exhaust all options when problem-solving to avoid re-collection

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

Equipment maintenance

    • Maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, vortex, refrigerator, freezers)

Limited messenger service as required

    • Promptly delivers specimens or paperwork throughout the health care campus as required.
    • Promptly activates and executes the pneumatic tube downtime procedures as required
    • Is knowledgeable in the use of resources to identify transport temperatures for all specimens and ensure stability

Scheduling

    • Must be flexible in scheduling and cooperation in performing all assigned tasks
    • Responsible for working rotating on-call, weekends, and holidays

Performs other duties as assigned by the Phlebotomy and Central Lab Services leadership team

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: High School Diploma / GED

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Graduation from a Phlebotomy Program

 

Preferred Experience:                                                                                                                      

  • Previous scientific laboratory experience

 

Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations: MLT (ASCP), CLA (ASCP), PBT (ASCP)

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Knowledge: basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security
  • Technology skills: electronic mail, Microsoft Office applications, typing, internet software, Microsoft Windows
