Job Summary

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Certified Educator under the guidance of the Director, is responsible for management, supervision and coordination of the diversified program that provides a variety of pastoral and spiritual care services for patients, families, and staff.  The CPE Educator accomplishes the program objectives through a collaborative strategy that engages interdisciplinary colleagues, interns, residents, staff chaplains, per diem chaplains, volunteers, community resources and interested others in the functioning of the program.  Provides leadership for program organization, development, accreditation, and evaluation of services and systems in close collaboration with the Director. The CPE Educator oversees all aspects of recruitment, admissions, curriculum development, program evaluation for all accredited levels of Clinical Pastoral Education. Provides instruction and supervision for the chaplain interns and residents. As the face of the Spiritual Care Program participates in Hospital and Department committees, professional spiritual care organizations and community faith-based groups. Partners with the Development Department to enhance and/ or expand program offerings. Complies with all department and hospital policies and procedures especially those regarding patient confidentiality and informed consent. Demonstrates and models professional behaviors in accordance with the Department of Patient and Family Services Core Values as well as the CHOP Values ICARE. Serves as a mentor/coach for staff.  Subscribes and adheres to the Chaplain Code of Ethics.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Pastoral Education: 

  • Provides excellent clinical pastoral education supervision to students enrolled in the CHOP CPE program.
  • Maintains ACPE accreditation for the CHOP Spiritual Care Program.
  • Provides CPE units complying with all CPE standards, facilitating groups, providing didactic sessions, supervising students and completing student evaluations.
  • Serves as primary contact between the hospital and the students for issues arising during a student’s field experience.
  • Participates in the orientation and education programs of other departments.
  • Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, responding to inquiries of potential students
  • Works with the CPE Advisory Council.
  • Maintains the CHOP CPE portfolio.
  • Belongs to an ACPE Community of Practice, and is faithful to ACPE peer review
  • Conducts periodic inter-disciplinary seminars to educate staff about the matters of spirituality for children and families as well as providers.
  • Maintains appropriate materials that can be utilized by families and staff.


As the face and content expert of the Spiritual Care Program, represents the hospital in matters of religion and spiritual care and provides direction for spiritual care service delivery 

  • Ensures the delivery of an effective and efficient program of Spiritual Care Services to patients, families, and staff of all faith traditions.
  • Serves on Hospital Committees as assigned such as Ethics Committee.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates innovative approaches to the provision of spiritual care at the Hospital.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining a strategic plan for Spiritual Care Services that is aligned with overall institutional goals and objectives.
  • Oversees the Schlimm Center for Prayer and Reflection and assures that the facilities are appropriately cared for and comfortable.

  • Develops plan for supervision, consultation and/or learning.
  • Utilizes team members, peers and supervisory staff in consultation for professional development.
  • Incorporates new knowledge and feedback into practice.
  • Meets annual requirements for professional continuing education

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

CPE Certified Educator

Required Education and Experience

Required Education:  Masters of Divinity degree from a seminary member of the American Association of Theological Schools


Required experience:  3 years of previous general hospital chaplain experience is required

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Competence in providing supervision and pastoral training to students
  • Knowledge of ACPE standards and requirements
  • Ability to forge successful collaborations with patients, families, staff, leaders and physicians at all levels within the Hospital and across the Care Network.
  • Excellent organizational skills and experience in managing an institutional function requiring systems thinking in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Solid knowledge of Title VI, Joint Commission and other relevant regulations 
  • Working knowledge of data systems preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Office software applications; Knowledge of basic data management and computer skills essential; EPIC.
