Job Summary

The Assistant Manager is the immediate supervisor of bargaining unit employees within the Environmental & Linen Services Department.  The Assistant Manager ensures hospital standards of sanitation; cleanliness and aesthetic appearance is adhered to according to hospital and departmental policy & procedures in conjunction with external regulatory agency guidelines.  The Assistant Manager will assist where needed in the linen services scope of responsibility.

Job Responsibilities
  • Operational/Process
    • Responsible for ensuring that agreed quality of cleanliness is achieved.
    • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Assign and prioritize daily staff according to operational needs.
    • Ensuring timely compilation and submittal of hospital/department required reports and documentation follow-up.
    • Ensure Quality Control Rounds are regularly conducted and documented.
    • Responsible for direct initiation of required maintenance requests and reporting status to appropriate Manager.
    • Ensures departmental compliance with regulations of JCAHO, State and City Health Departments, OSHA any other regulatory bodies.
    • Acts as representative of Department in absence of Manager.
    • Responsible for ensuring staff have the required supplies and equipment to fully perform all tasks and duties within the approved guidelines/policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for employee compliance of Hospital and Departmental Policy & Procedures.


  • Technical
    • Ensures that equipment is being used properly and that all safety procedures are adhered too.
    • Ensure staff follows recommended/approved/agreed practices for cleaning tasks and quality.
    • Ensures that chemicals are being utilized properly and that all safety procedures are adhered too.
    • Actively participate in external professional meetings/activities/career development and seminars, etc. to ensure industry knowledge for best practices and procedures.
    • Responsible for employee compliance of Hospital and Departmental Policy & Procedures.
    • Ensures an adequate, timely, clean, safe delivery and pick-up of all linens for all customers.
    • Fills and administers linen supply distribution systems
    • Files required linen reports.
  • Human Resources
    • Plan staffing allocation to maximize available labor and budget resources.
    • Responsible for employee compliance of Hospital and Departmental Policy & Procedures.
    • Responsible for all employee evaluations annual and “end of probationary” are completed on a time appropriate basis, according to policy and established protocols.
    • Takes disciplinary action after discussion with appropriate manager up to/including termination.
    • Responsible for ongoing coaching/training and development of staff.
    • Participates in selection process of employees.
    • Maintain knowledge of 1199C Collective Bargaining Agreement to ensure correct interpretation and application.


  • Team Coordination
    • Responsible for conducting staff meeting(s) and ensuring employee communications.
    • Acts as (proactive) resource for customers providing the necessary and timely follow-up.
    • Participates in problem solving and process improvement opportunities.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School/GED
  • Previous supervisory/managerial level experience
  • Experience in healthcare environmental or hospital industry
  • Experience in customer services related business
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Bachelor's Degree
